Seminar: Key considerations for COVID- 19 vaccine supply
The COVID–19 vaccines roll out both locally and globally, has garnered interest from various institutions and communities. The intricacies and, the compliance frameworks, that are integrated within these supply chains are often misinterpreted. It is imperative to understand how these elements impact the supply and value chain in terms of delivery, safety, and compliance and ultimately the progress of the vaccines roll out locally.
We were joined by Ida Motlhasedi, Head of Quality & Responsible Pharmacist of Fresenius Kabi- South Africa – A global healthcare company with a robust sterile manufacturing presence both locally and abroad.

Seminar: The Green Deal and its consequences for South African manufacturers
The European Union has recently announced new environmental legislation that will fundamentally alter the ability of South African manufacturers to access this key export market. The legislation ranges from new carbon border taxes due for implementation in 2023; to circular economy directives covering product lifecycle use, and in the case of the automotive industry, ever tighter vehicle emission targets, and ultimately the banning of internal combustion vehicles. Navigating the complexity of these legislative and regulatory changes is likely to be challenging for most South African based manufacturers, although they also represent major opportunities. Firms that can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and manufacture environmentally sustainable products may experience huge export demand growth in this high-value market. Join Dr. Johan van Zyl as he discusses his view on the Green Deal and what it means for South African manufacturers

Lean Operations Management
The course starts with a review of the attributes of lean leadership. The underlying culture and value systems imbued within lean operations management are explored, followed by an exploration of lean execution case studies and examples from across the globe. It then unpacks the mechanics of lean operations management and the core dimensions underpinning successful lean management implementation. These two days give rise to a project week where participants are placed in syndicated teams and tasked with resolving a lean operations management challenge. These challenges become the content for the third day of the course, where projects are presented and discussed in detail. The final day shifts to a real-world example, where a leading manufacturer in eThekwini is visited and its lean culture and operating methodologies assessed by course participants.

Delivering supply chain performance for export growth during the pandemic: Experiences of South Africa’s citrus industry
Date: 5th May 2021
The production and export of a perishable horticulture product presents particular challenges around a demanding and complex logistics chain. This experience of the citrus industry actors in turning the proverbial “lemons”, (and grapefruit, oranges and clementines too), into a major South African success story holds much relevance for other industries. Justin Chadwick and his team at the Citrus Growers Association have been at the heart of these processes and have worked tirelessly to support the success of the citrus sector in recent years. As part of TWIMS’ ongoing efforts to share insights with those in the broader manufacturing and production community, Justin has agreed to make a presentation at the TWIMS Breakfast Seminar series on, “Delivering supply chain performance for export growth during the pandemic: Experiences of South Africa’s citrus industry.”
Anticipating the impact of the AfCFTA on South African industrialists
Date: 25th February 2021
The 33rd Assembly of the African Union which took place from 9-10 February 2020 officially launched the operational phase of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The main aim of the AfCFTA is to create a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business, persons, and investments. The Agreement envisages that 90% of products would be traded duty-free within ten years. As of 5 February 2021, 36 AU member states have ratified the Agreement.
As the Agreement shifts into its operational phase, it is important for South African industrialists to consider what potential opportunities this Agreement provides to their respective value chains in the next 2-3 years.
